Relaxing Your JAW Can Alleviate Your TMJ Pain

Common symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) include jaw pain, facial pain, headaches and pain in or around the ear. You may also hear a clicking or popping sound when you open and close your mouth. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), TMJ disorders are the second most common pain-causing musculoskeletal conditions after chronic low back pain.

TMJ disorders affect 5% to 12% of the population, and women are twice as likely to experience TMJ disorders as men. Most people who have TMJ experience temporary but recurring pain. However, some cases result in long-term problems.

Depending on the severity of your TMJ disorder, there are a few different ways to manage the pain. Consistently wearing your daytime and nighttime splints can prevent clinching or grinding of your teeth. You should also avoid chewing gum and other hard foods and try to relax, stretch or exercise your jaw. A soft diet is strongly recommended and taking an anti-inflammatory and or a muscle relaxer could relieve some pain.
