What triggers your migraine?

There are several triggers for a migraine ranging from genetics to the food you consume. Migraines are consistent with unilateral throbbing pain and can last as long as 72 hours. Accompanied by sensitivity to light, nausea, and sometimes aura (sensation of twinkling lights or objects), migraines occur when the trigeminal nerve becomes irritated causing a chemical release of throbbing pain. Neck and jaw pain are often triggers for migraine because the trigeminal nerve also supplies the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) and jaw muscles. Women are more likely to have migraines than men, in fact, 3 times more likely. Migraine triggers can include alcohol (red wine), caffeine, weather changes, stress, and depression.
